50. Shaken Not Stirred

An earthquake woke me up at 5am. This is not a metaphor. Although it does get me thinking about metaphors, mortality, and whether or not I am prepared for “the big one.” It is a strange thing to prepare for catastrophe. I suppose the alternative is to choose to be in denial about it all together. This piece is about finding a healthy level of denial in order to stay sane.

Now That You Ask is a podcast that looks at topics that range from death to desire, and from wondrous to downright whacky. Join host, Akasha Halsey as she takes listeners on a journey through her writing and experience with life’s most persistent questions.

Oh, this one really made me laugh, Akasha. Thank you for that. Cynthia always used to poo-poo my earthquake preparedness kits: one in the closet at the condo, one in the car (complete with pop-up tent, waterproof matches and solar generated radio), a small one at the office (just in case there weren’t enough supplies to go around). Actually, I still carry my earthquake preparedness backpack in the car, even here in Indiana. As my father always told us: YOU be prepared to take care of yourself so you don’t become someone that needs to be rescued. I have always taken that to heart. Now…I wonder where I put my emergency supply of one dollar bills? Hmmmm… (It’s actually tornados we worry about out here and I have no basement so what’s a person to do? The cats don’t know to join me in my windowless dressing room off the master bathroom. Sigh…they have no sense of being prepared for disaster.)
